Children learn about Thanksgiving early

SALISBURY — The Housatonic Child Care Center was a hive of activity Thursday, Nov. 18 — even more so than usual. About 55 parents, teachers, children and community friends gathered at the center to celebrate an early Thanksgiving.

“We invited anyone who provides services: the cleaners, the special service coordinators, the musician who works with the kids, the librarian, board members, anybody and everybody who has anything to do with the center, said Kate Dziedzic, director of the center.

Before the feast, the children did a short performance of songs, sharing “Brave Little Indians and “The Finger Band with their guests.

Then everyone got down to the business of feasting. The children made cornbread, homemade butter and green bean casserole and parents and guests contributed their own dishes.

“We had a tremendous amount of food, Dziedzic said. “All the families contributed something.

Dziedzic said she was especially pleased by the sense of community at the event.

“Parents were able to put faces with names that they’ve heard about from their children, and they actually had the time to sit down and talk to other parents, she said. “It was really lovely.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
