Ethel May Tanner

MILLERTON — Ethel May Tanner, 90, formerly of Fairview Village in Brattleboro, Vt., died Nov. 18, 2010, at Pine Heights Nursing Home in Brattleboro.

Mrs. Tanner was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Sept. 6, 1920, the daughter of Daisy (Vankirk) and George Fox. She was raised and educated in Hackettstown, N.J.

She worked at the Plaid Stamp Store in Brattleboro while it was in operation and was also employed at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in the billing department.

She lived in Millerton for many years and worked at the Barnard Flower Shop.

From 1979, until her return to the Brattleboro area she  made her home in Clover, S.C.

Mrs. Tanner was a communicant of Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church and held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary Post 178 in Millerton.

She was a faithful and devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose life revolved around her family.

Of her pastimes and interests she enjoyed gardening, crocheting, travel and time shared with her family and friends.

On June 21, 1941, she married Richard Tanner in Salisbury, Md., He predeceased her in 2001.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Boyd and her husband, Leon, of Brattleboro and Patricia Root of Newfane, Vt.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Robert Richard Tanner; a daughter, Barbara Ann Ronan; three brothers, Clarence, George and Vincent Fox; and two sisters, Elizabeth Tanner and Florence Fox.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Nov. 22 at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Richard O’Donnell, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Tyler Cemetery in Vernon, Vt., where she was laid to rest next to her husband.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
