Webutuck considers, is smaller better?

WEBUTUCK — Webutuck Central School District’s superintendent and Board of Education are looking into the possibility of reinstating a series of small, intimate forums for parents and community members to meet with representatives of the school district to discuss education.

Superintendent Steven Schoonmaker said that he had been speaking with former interim 7-12 Principal John Oates, who had used the “educational summit format at previous districts he had worked at.

The benefit to this particular format, Schoonmaker said, would be to collect a broad spectrum of feedback, specially from parents and taxpayers who might not be able to attend public meetings or might feel uncomfortable speaking candidly in front of a large group of people.

Board Trustee John Perotti said that Webutuck had held similar events in the past.

“We had community meetings at a parent’s home, where administrators, board members and teachers would attend, he said, “and we would listen to the problems in that community or that area.

Perotti said that there ended up being legal issues that forced an end to the meetings. Elementary Principal Katy McEnroe elaborated; she said there were instances in other school districts when similar meetings were held close to elections and some used the opportunity to sway voter opinion. But the basic idea was sound, according to school board President Dale Culver.

“I thought they were very successful, Culver said, even though the district’s legal council had discouraged continuing with the meetings at that time. “The idea itself of meeting out and about the community is not a bad idea.

“It would reach a little deeper on a regular basis, he continued, “and reach out beyond the group of people that we normally hear from. A fresh perspective will create dialogue.

Schoonmaker said that a monthly Saturday morning “coffee forum was in the works that would also provide more of an informal setting for parents and residents.

“Administration and staff across the board feel that would be a positive step, he said. There is currently no first date for those series of forums scheduled.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
