A Coffee Table Book On Books

Dan Wechsler is a book publisher, which in this day and age is no mean feat. Particularly since what he publishes is the odd and esoteric. Not airport novels, not James Patterson, not how-tos, rather the eclectic and visually stimulating.

As a dealer in old and rare books he had an invaluable resource at hand for a coffee table book on, yes, books. Titled “Strange and Wonderful, An Informal Visual History of Manuscript Books and Albums,†his latest offering is art first and foremost. The most relevant word in the title is ‘visual’ as the book is a compendium of images, less about the written word and more about the message or iconography. It actually functions as a catalog organized by the letter of the alphabet, and subject matter. Page after page offers up arresting, diverse, gorgeously colored but inscrutable reproductions from the original books. To make sense of it, and bring the images into some sort of context the reader flips to the index to see a cover of the source book and a description of its contents. The material ranges in age from the 14th century to current day and spans the globe from Northern Sumatra to Cornwall, CT.

The Sumatran offering titled “Bark†c. 1800, is a manuscript from the Batak tribe, which it is noted that “although the information in this book is obviously impossible for most people to ascertain, the object itself nevertheless possesses a tactile beauty that is not restricted by the barrier of language.†It is however restricted by the confines of the printed page as the reader misses out on touching or even seeing the object in three dimensions.

The local connection is artist Brendan O’Connell, whose work is represented under “W†which has books on Walmart (O’Connell’s) and weaving. “T†offers up books on tattoos, temperance and Taoist gods; “P†includes pathology, postcards, prison and palmistry. Many of the books are one of a kind, hand-written, or at least bound by hand, works of art, certainly not anything that is mass-produced. And Wechsler’s offering under the imprint of Sanctuary Books fits that mold as “Strange and Wonderful†is limited to 1,000 copies.

Wechsler will be at Johnnycake Books in Salisbury Oct. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. In addition to “Strange and Wonderful†he will also showcase the two other books in the Sanctuary catalog; “The Urban Prisoner; Photographs by Matt Weber†an homage to the mostly seedier side of New York City and a charming little book “a vegetable collection – Recipes and Rhymes to conquer kids of all ages†by Dorothy Perillo Linder.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
