One of my worst seasons ever!

This week’s record, 4-10, for the season, 40-36

Pick of the Week: 0-1, for the season, 3-2

It’s official. This is my worst start ever for a season and my first losing week that I can remember. Wow — my picks were just plain awful.

On the other hand, my baseball picks have been right on: I am 4-for-4.

Maybe I should switch to strictly baseball.

Here are this week’s football picks, with the hope that we’ll see a positive turnaround:

Sunday, Oct. 17

Cleveland at Pittsburgh — The Browns continue to play hard but have been unable to win a game. The Steelers get back Big Ben, and that should be enough to win what could be a dogfight, 20-17.

Detroit at New York Giants — The Lions exploded against the Rams, while the Giants dominated Houston, so both teams are playing well. With that said, I think the reins have been taken off Eli Manning. That combined with the stellar play of their defense means the Giants prevail, 27-17.

New Orleans at Tampa Bay — Who would have thought the Saints would be in a position to lose their third game in a row? The Bucs are playing tough but don’t score a lot, while the Saints defense has not played well. I’m going with a hunch: the Bucs, 23-20.

Atlanta at Philadelphia — The Falcons are good and shouldn’t surprise anyone. The Eagles have been scratching and clawing for wins and will play tough at home. I like Atlanta, but if Vick plays for the Eagles, I’m not so sure. Falcons win it, 30-24.

Seattle at Chicago — The Seahawks have never been much of a road team, while the Bears usually play tough at home. I’ll stick with Chicago in this one as my Pick of the Week, 24-17.

Miami at Green Bay — The Dolphins need to generate some offense and that won’t be easy against a Packer team coming off a tough road loss to the Skins. I’ll stick with Green Bay, 27-19.

San Diego at St. Louis — I think the Rams can win this game, but I also think that the Chargers have to win this game. I’ll go with the Chargers, 34-20.

Kansas City at Houston — This is a very interesting matchup. The Chiefs showed how tough they can play in losing to the Colts, while the Texans got run over by the Giants at home. I don’t think Houston will lose two in a row at home, so I’ll stick with them, 27-16.

Baltimore at New England — I don’t think the Pats can win this one without Moss and Faulk, so I’m going with the Ravens, 17-13.

Oakland at San Francisco — The Raiders are improving, but I’m going to give the 49ers one more chance. I’ll take San Francisco, 23-20.

New York Jets at Denver — The Jets are rolling and show no signs of letting up. Denver will play tough, but I like the Jets, 20-16.

Dallas at Minnesota — Talk about two teams that are struggling. This is a must-win game for both teams, and neither team has really shown strength. I’m not big on either team, but Favre, Moss and Petersen should do enough to win.  I like the Vikings, 24-21.

Indianapolis at Washington — There may be only one way to slow these Redskins down and that’s for me to pick them. I will oblige. I’ll take Washington, 21-19.

Monday, Oct. 18

Tennessee at Jacksonville — This is a good matchup between division rivals. This division is wide open, so a win here is key for both teams. I’ll go with my gut. Titans win it, 27-23.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
