Charlotte S. Dufour

NEW HARTFORD — Charlotte S. Dufour, 96, died Oct. 9, 2010. Born April 21, 1914, in Willimantic, she was a daughter of the late Mabel (Lewis) and John Sheffield.

A resident of New Hartford since 1924, Mrs. Dufour was the town clerk of New Hartford for 33 years as well as clerk of the court until the establishment of the current circuit court system.

She was a dedicated member of St. John’s Episcopal Church for 86 years and also very active with the women’s group at the church. She was a member and past matron of the Eastern Star and a member of the Republican Town Committee of New Hartford.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald Dufour and his wife, Jeannie, of New Hartford and Alan Dufour and his wife, Pat, of Hommassa, Fla.; a brother, Herb Sheffield of Texas; eight grandchildren, Kenneth Dufour, Suzanne McCray, Deborah Dufour, Linda Nelson, Michele Benson, Edward Dufour, Jeff Dufour and Zachary Dufour; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Vincent Raymond Dufour; three grandchildren, William Dufour, Charlotte Louise Dufour and Robert Dufour; two brothers, John and Edward Sheffield; and two sisters, Eleanor DuBois and Isabelle Covington.

The family thanked the staff and residents at Valerie Manor for their support and concern.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, 11 a.m., at St. John’s Episcopal Church, New Hartford. Burial will be private. Friends may call on Friday, Oct. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, New Hartford.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
