Webutuck notches dual wins over Coleman, 4-0, 7-0

WEBUTUCK — Webutuck High School’s girls varsity soccer played back-to-back games against John A. Coleman Catholic last Thursday, Oct. 7, and Friday, Oct. 8, shutting out Coleman in both matches and tallying double-digit scoring.

Thursday’s game was won 4-0 by Webutuck on two goals from Rileigh Campion, both assisted by Victoria Cullinan, and single goals by Cullinan and Danielle Stoetzner.

“The girls played a good game on Thursday, but we played much better the next day against the same team,� said coach Mark Moren.

Webutuck won that game 7-0. Scoring in the first half was made by Brooke Dahoney, assisted by Stoetzner, Brianna Bailey, Cullinan, assisted by Dahoney, and Maddie Trotter with two goals, one assisted by Cullinan and the other assisted by Jeanne Boyd.

“We moved the ball around better and the girls set themselves up for better chances at finishing on goal,� Moren said.

In the second half goals were scored by Allison Flinn, assisted by Meagan McCoy, and Stoetzner, assisted by Flinn.

Arianna Evans started in goal both games and finished with two shut-outs.

Webutuck improves to 5-5 overall, 3-5 in their league and 2-1 in their division.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
