Anthony J. Peters

SALISBURY — Anthony J. Peters of Fort Myers, Fla., died on Oct. 7, 2010, at a young 94 years of age. He is survived by his loving wife, Irene L. Peters.

He was a gregarious lover of life, the New York Yankees, traveling to Ireland and Italy, crossword puzzles, cooking and baking, an inveterate shopper, a lover of gizmos and electronic gadgets, and new cars.  He had a long and illustrious career in real estate starting as an office boy at Cushman & Wakefield in 1933, rising to be a top broker who in 1966 set a phenomenal brokerage record of 3,300,000 square feet of leases in one year, earning the name “Mr. Downtown.â€� He became president in 1971 and chairman of the board in 1976.  

He was the owner of the Interlaken Inn and the Woodland Restaurant and the developer of Interlaken Estates in Lakeville.

After retirement, he developed The Carlton in Boca Raton, Fla., The Pierre in Longboat Key, Fla., and Lion’s Head in Salisbury.  

Mr. Peters purchased 25-plus  acres in Lakeville and donated them to the town to be developed as a community park and recreation area in honor of his late wife, Mary V. Peters.  He also dedicated in perpetuity 8 acres of lakefront property owned by him on Lake Wononscopomuc as open land.

He was long active in community and charitable causes such as the Board of Education of Glen Cove, N.Y., the Board of Regents of Marymount International Schools, the Board of Governors of the Marymount School in New York City, The Cardinal Cooke Guild and Cardinal Cooke’s Committee of the Laity in New York City. He was always active in parish activities wherever he lived.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Vincent J. Peters; his children, Mary Ann and Vincent Giffuni, Anthony J. Peters Jr., Patricia “Tippy� and John Cavanagh, Kathy Peters and Stuart Berman, Elizabeth Mastopietro, Carol Peters, Robert Peters and John Peters and Julia Belkin; his grandchildren, Matthew Giffuni, Sara Joseph, Sharon Dane, Jeffrey Cavanagh, Carly Berman, Romi Peters, Max Peters and Alexandra Peters; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary V. Peters; his second wife, Marie Kelly Peters; and a grandson, Brian Cavanagh.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to The Cardinal Cooke Guild, 1011 First Ave., New York, NY 10021 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.  

Funeral services were held Oct. 9 at St. Raphael Church in Lehigh Acres, Fla. A burial service will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y., on Nov. 4 at 11 a.m.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
