Show of Forstmann work at gallery in Kent

KENT — An exhibit of artwork by Eric Forstmann will open at the Eckert Fine Art gallery on Saturday, Oct. 23, and remain up until Saturday, Nov. 6.

Forstmann, who has lived in Sharon since 1991, is a realist painter known for his still life and landscape paintings.

He grew up in Warren and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

“My wife, Elizabeth, and I lived in Hoboken, N.J., before we moved to Sharon,†Forstmann said. “We moved here because we were looking for better educational opportunities for our children. We knew the area would be great for our family and we wanted to move into a safe community.â€

The Forstmanns have four children: Tyler, 21, who is attending Santa Monica College, in California, as a photography major; Alyssa, 18, who is attending the Boston University College of Fine Arts; Justin, 15, who attends Housatonic Valley Regional High School; and 10-year-old Olivia, who attends Sharon Center School.

Over the summer, Alyssa helped gather some of the many works that are in the hands of private collectors in the area for the exhibition. Forstmann has been a generous donor to area nonprofit auctions and events. His paintings are evocative of the rural beauty of the Northwest Corner.

“I’m not really trying to narrate or tell people things with my work,†Forstmann said. “I don’t get too preachy with my paintings. I’m kind of an arranger; I try to make things enjoyable and beautiful.â€

Landscape paintings, he said, should reflect not just the beauty of the setting but also the mood of the moment.

The still lifes he paints are more deliberate and meticulous.

“It often takes weeks to create a still life,†he confided. “Landscapes are much more fun.â€

Eckert Fine Art is at 27 North Main St. in Kent. The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 3 to 6 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
