Town and Village Update: Hanson resigns from Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee

MILLBROOK — Don Hanson, as expected, submitted his resignation from the Comprehensive Plan View Steering Committee as co-chairman and member on Thursday, Sept. 30, following the written resignations of the other co-chair, Tom Beaumont, in addition to Frank Genova and Jim Shequine on Thursday,  Sept. 9.

“The role and function of the town of Washington’s start-up Steering Committee for the comprehensive plan update has been completed, Hanson wrote. “The subcommittees still have a major and vital role in the update process.

The town of Washington board is expected to approve town Supervisor Florence Prisco’s four replacement appointments to the Steering Committee, announced at the town meeting on Monday, Sept. 27. Prisco told The Millerton News that she does not intend to appoint new heads of the housing and demographic committees to replace Karen Mosca and Maureen King, who will have double steering committee and subcommittee responsibilities.

No party endorsements or candidates

Neither the Republican nor Democratic parties of the village of Millbrook caucused this election season. This means that the three incumbents running for re-election, Mayor Laura Hurley and Trustees Joe Spagnola and Buddy Cox, are all running unopposed for re-election to the Village Board.

Hurley has said in the past that she feels strongly that national politics should play no role in village politics. It appears both parties endorse this point of view.

Insurance adjustor

selected

The Village Board announced the selection of Van Kleeck Winne Adjusters of Rhinebeck to estimate the reasonable cost of repairing the damage caused by the Village Hall fuel oil leak and remediation to the adjoining properties.

Sewer work started

Work began on relining old sewer pipes on Reservoir Road Wednesday, Sept. 22, as planned. Work is proceeding at a section each day. A request to the state to add six additional sections has been submitted. Because the cost for the original scope of work was less than expected, there are grant funds left over. This will permit the village to repair all of the problem spots in the sewer identified by a robotic camera earlier this year. The project includes 20 percent of the entire village sewer system.

Court consolidation moves forward

In the first step to consolidate the town and village court system, the Village Board passed a resolution on Tuesday, Sept 28, to eliminate the position of village justice as of January 2012. The proposal will be adopted unless 140 residents of the village sign a petition opposing the move and requesting a referendum vote on the issue.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
