Litchfield outshoots Northwestern girls soccer, 6-0

WINSTED — The Litchfield Cowgirls hammered the Highlanders in a rainy afternoon of soccer Monday, Sept. 27, at Northwestern. The Cowgirls seized an early lead in the first half and tripled it in the second to take a commanding 6-0 victory and maintain their perfect 5-0 season.

Northwestern and Litchfield alternated pressure early on, with neither side able to take control. The Highlanders slowly began to move play deeper into Litchfield’s end, when things shifted quickly in favor of the Cowgirls. Cowgirl Marissa Quesnel broke free from the Northwestern defense to fire a shot from far out above the reach of the goalkeeper and under the crossbar for the first goal of the day.

Northwestern continued to produce chances offensively but were consistently undone by Litchfield goalkeeper Kelly Lewis. Lewis was fearless, coming far out of her net to challenge the Highlander’s offense and efficiently shut them down. Northwestern had two near goal moments, taking the ball along the sideline and drawing Lewis from the net, but both chances drifted wide.

Litchfield returned to work around Northwestern’s net, patiently passing and trying to create openings. The Cowgirls managed to tally another goal late in the first half to capture a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Despite increased rainfall and the two-goal deficit, Northwestern sprang from the break looking better on both sides of the ball. The Cowgirls, however, quickly cauterized the Highlander’s sudden burst of momentum with another goal by Quesnel and then another soon after to take a 4-0 lead in the second.

The Highlanders continued to battle and began generating a few solid offensive opportunities, none of which they were able to finish. Quesnel’s day was far from over, as she completed her hat trick goal and put the game far out of reach, 5-0.

Northwestern was unable to respond and took the 6-0 loss at home. Northwestern falls to 3-2, while Litchfield remains untarnished at 5-0.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
