Housy tallies second win

FALLS VILLAGE — For the second week in a row, the Housatonic-Wamogo Mountaineers came back from a half-time deficit to win decisively, shutting out the Canton Warriors in the second half for a convincing 38-19 win.

The Moutaineers scored 25 unanswered points in the second half, with Jake Sutterland rumbling in for two short-yardage touchdowns (he had four in the game), while Donyell Williams had two scores off 25- and 4-yard runs. This was made possible by the outstanding power running of Tanner Brisset, who had a monster game, with 278 yards on 31 carries; and the ferocious blocking by the offensive line, who continually open holes for the running backs.

“Our guys stayed calm, said Coach Deron Bayer after the game. “Two weeks in a row they were behind when we reached the half, but they don’t get down. We told them that the test of the game will be the first series of the third quarter, and they responded.

The Mountaineers passed that test easily. After the Housy offense marched down and scored on that first possession of the third quarter, with Sutterland slamming the ball into the end zone from three yards out, the defense came in and forced Canton to turn the ball over on downs. This gave Housy great field position in Canton’s half of the field.

Two plays later, Williams bolted up the middle on his way to a 25-yard touchdown. Then, on Canton’s next possession, Jake Foley recovered a Warrior fumble, and Sutterland notched his fourth score, ending a 19-point third quarter for the Mountaineers.

Playing a home game under the lights for the first time in at least eight years, Housy stumbled at the beginning when the Warriors ripped off a 47-yard run off a sweep less than two minutes into the game.

But the Mountaineers responded quickly when Sutterland bulled his way across the goal line for the first of his four touchdowns. That set the pace as the two teams traded touchdowns, leading to a 19-13 lead for the Warriors at the half. But in the end the now-2-0 Mountaineers dominated, and will host Enfield, a new team in the Pequot League, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 1 pm.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
