Webutuck girls finish week with a win

WEBUTUCK — It was a smart, heads-up play that notched the Webutuck High School’s varsity girls soccer team its second win of the season Friday, Sept. 17.

Facing Dover at home, the Bombers found themselves trailing early after a Dover breakaway put the first goal on the board. But a foul on sophomore Brianna Bailey in the Dover penalty area gave junior Captain Victoria Cullinan a penalty kick. Cullinan’s shot found the back of the net about 10 minutes before halftime, tying the game.

Cullinan was a part of both goals for Webutuck, setting up the winning goal in the 33rd minute of the second half. Dribbling down the side of the field, she crossed a pass over the middle to junior Cari Cestone, who headed the ball past the Dover goalie to put the Bombers ahead 2-1, for good.

“The girls played pretty well today, said Webutuck coach Mark Moren. “We had a lot of shots on goal. Maybe we could have put some more goals in but we’ll take that as our win.

Webutuck improves to 2-2 overall, following two losses to Ellenville (a 0-1 loss) and Rhinebeck (a 2-1 marathon where Webutuck fell short in double overtime) earlier last week.

Their next home game is scheduled Thursday, Sept. 23, against Spackenkill at 4:15 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
