Good times will roll at fire department's Mardi Gras gala

SHARON — The cafeteria at Sharon Center School will be transformed into a festive New Orleans-style Creole Cafe for the volunteer fire department’s Mardi Gras gala on Sept. 25.

The decorator for the event is Marilyn Hock, who has created the decor for past fundraisers that took partygoers (in spirit) to Paris and Tuscany.

Outside the cafeteria, for drinks and appetizers, there will be Club New Orleans; the school gym will become the French Quarter, for after-dinner dancing.

Music this year will be provided by the Scott Heth Quintet. Work by nine local artists will be raffled off, including pieces by Eric Forstmann, Judy Albright, Karen Kellogg and Sunny Kneissel. There will be photographs by Jane Perotti and Ian Johnson, a graphic print by David Armstrong, ceramic art by Pam West and jewelry by Lilly Rand.

The fire department hosts a gala every year and a half. It is the volunteers’ major fundraiser.

Last year, the department responded to 59 automatic alarms, five carbon monoxide alarms, two structure fires, two chimney fires, five smoke investigations, 23 mutual aid calls and 28 motor vehicle accidents.

Tickets for the Mardi Gras gala are $30 per person or $60 in advance and can be purchased at Sharon Pharmacy and Town Hall. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $35 per person or $70 a couple.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
