Cards over Falcons and a 'scary' pick

First week:11-5

Pick of the Week: 0-1

Sorry about my Pick of the Week, but I don’t think I was the only one who liked the 49ers. By the way, I’d like to know just how many people thought the Niners would get blown out.

Not a bad start considering it was opening day, and I’m rather proud of my pick of the Skins over the Cowboys Sunday night and the Chiefs over the Chargers on Monday night, as well. Plenty of tough games again this week, so let’s get on with it!

Sunday, Sept. 19

Pittsburgh at Tennessee — The Steelers squeezed out a win over the Falcons this past week, but I don’t think they’ll be so lucky this week. Jeff Fisher’s Titans are good and I like them in this game, 19-13.

Philadelphia at Detroit — Both of these teams not only lost their first game but they also lost their starting QBs. With that said, I’ll go with the Eagles with Mike Vick at the helm, 23-20.

Baltimore at Cincinnati — A lot has been said about the dismal performance of the Jets’ Mark Sanchez, but having watched the game, I didn’t think Joe Flacco was much better. I look for the Bengals to bounce back with a 20-13 win.

Arizona at Atlanta — The Cards managed to sneak one out against the Rams, but that won’t happen against the Falcons. I like Atlanta as my Pick of the Week, 27-20.

Miami at Minnesota — The Vikings will have had nine days to prepare for this game and they will need it. Miami is a solid team but I don’t think they can score enough to win this one.  I’ll go with the Vikings, 23-16.

Kansas City at Cleveland — The Chiefs are coming off a big win over the Chargers at home, while the Browns picked up a road win at Tampa. I’ll stick with the home team: Browns win it 21-17.

Tampa Bay at Carolina — Neither team played well on opening day, but Carolina will be tough at home. I’ll stick with the Panthers, 27-17.

Buffalo at Green Bay — The Bills play tough, but not nearly tough enough to win in Green Bay.  I’ll stick with the Packers, 34-17.

Chicago at Dallas — The Cowboys are smarting after an opening road loss against the Redskins. You’ve got to like Dallas. Cowboys win, 24-19.

Seattle at Denver — Pete Carroll surprised a lot of people, especially the 49ers, last week, so why not do it again this week on the road? This pick scares me because Seattle is normally a bad road team. I’ll go with a hunch. I like the Seahawks, 30-24.

St. Louis at Oakland — I’m pulling for both of these teams. They have had more than their share of problems in recent years, but someone has to win. I think the Raiders will, 28-24.

Jacksonville at San Diego — The Chargers have a habit of keeping you guessing early in the season, but coming home to play should help. The Jags look to be improved but not enough to win this one.  I’ll stick with the Chargers, 28-17.

Houston at Washington — Houston scored 34 points against a pretty good Colts defense, so the Skins will need another great defensive performance if they hope to stay in this one. Regardless, I didn’t see enough offense from the Skins, so I’m going with Houston, 23-16.

New England at New York Jets — It would be easy to pick the Jets in this one, but Bill Belichick had the benefit of watching the Jets against the Ravens. That should make all the difference.  I’ll go with the Patriots, 19-9.

New York Giants at Indianapolis — This is a tough time for the Giants to be headed into Indianapolis. The Giants got better and better as the game went on against Carolina, but I just can’t see them winning this one. I’ll stick with Peyton over Eli, 27-23.

Monday, Sept. 20

New Orleans at San Francisco — I’m going with a hunch in this game. The Saints are real good, but if they could have a letdown it may be this week. My hunch is that it will not happen. I like the Saints, 31-20.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
