Grog, food, car racing at Hunt auction Sept. 25

FALLS VILLAGE—The D.M. Hunt Library will hold its ninth annual Auction in the Village on Saturday, Sept 25, at 5 p.m. at the library.

The evening will feature both silent and live auctions as well as catering by Freund’s Farm Market & Bakery. Fine wine, beer and the library’s Green Man Grog will be served. Tickets cost $25.

Drive a race car, take a flying lesson, go to a neighbor’s home with five friends and enjoy a big country-style breakfast: these are just a few of the auction offerings, organizer Sharon Hamilton said.

This is the fifth auction fundraiser Hamilton (who is co-chair of the Hunt Library Board of Trustees) has organized. More than 140 people attended last year, raising more than $15,000.

This year’s fundraising target? Hamilton wouldn’t say.

“The goal is not as important as getting people out,†she said, although she added that, “Fundraising keeps the doors open, the lights on and the staff paid.â€

The auction generates 20 percent of the library’s annual operating budget.

The live auction will be conducted by Colin Chambers, owner of the newly renovated Falls Village Inn. Bidders can vie for a full day of track time in Lime Rock Park’s 2010 BMW M3 or in the bidder’s own performance car.

Also offered are a night for four couples at the inn, or a weekend in Brooklyn at a private home. The silent auction will feature local food, goods and services and artisan crafts by village residents. Books and tickets to museums and performances are also on the auction list.

Event decorator Zoe Fedorjaczenko and volunteers have bundled many items into themed gift baskets. A catalog of auction items can be found at the library’s website, huntlibrary.org.

“This is going to be fun for everyone, but especially for me,†said Erica Joncyk, the library’s director.  “You’ll usually find me behind the bar serving wine and grog at the auction, but this year I’ll be one of the guests for the first time. I’ll be making sure that everyone tops their bids, so watch out!â€

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
