Leonard 'Lenny' Dudley

NORTH CANAAN — Leonard “Lenny Dudley, 71, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on Aug. 21, 2010. He was the husband of Virginia Dudley.

Lenny was born in Calais, Maine, on Aug. 29, 1938, the son of the late Sarah (Farley) and Theodore Dudley.

Lenny relocated his family to North Canaan from the Meriden, Conn., area more than 20 years ago to live the simple life in the country. In addition to his wife, Lenny is survived by his children, April Dudley and her partner, Jessica Carfagno, Todd Dudley and his wife, Michelle, of North Canaan and Darlene Holst-Grubbe of Sharon. He was known as Papa to his grandchildren, Michael Gdovin and his wife, Maggie, of Sharon, Kevin Gdovin of Hoschton, Ga., Kenneth Dudley of Sharon, Adriana and Breanna Sutton of North Canaan and Rollie Holst-Grubbe of Sharon, and to his great-grandson, Jordan Gdovin of Sharon.

Lenny is also survived by four siblings, Irene Ashby, Merle Dudley, Kathleen Lombardi, and Robert Dudley; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Lenny’s life on Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. at his home at 75 Clayton Road in North Canaan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Housatonic Valley Regional FFA, 246 Warren Turnpike Road, Falls Village, CT 06031.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
