Three Winsted area residents competing in Northwest Idol at Warner Theater Saturday

TORRINGTON — Two vocalists from Winsted and one from New Hartford will participate in the final competition of Northwest Idol, a singing competition that will hit the stage of the Warner Theatre this Saturday, Aug. 14, at 8 p.m.

Twelve performers have been chosen to compete in the finals — six in the ages 25 and older category and six in the 16 to 24 age group. Performers range in age from 16 to 66.

From Winsted, 21-year-old Heather Papolio will compete in the 16 to 24 group and Dan Labich, 40, will perform in the 25 and older group. David Wilcox, 25, of New Hartford will also compete in the 25 and older contest.

Additional competitors from other towns include Lizzy Armantino of Oakville, Patrick Downey of Torrington, Krystal Lynn of Wolcott, Theresa Murphy of Torrington and Aubrey VanAllen of Harwinton in the 16 to 24 group; and Allison Campagna of Thomaston, Brianna Engle of Torrington, Rick Sheldon of Torrington and Jennifer Wright of Bristol in the 25-plus group.

Each contestant is judged on presentation, appearance, professionalism and presentation as well as overall performance.

Hosting Saturday night’s event is Casey Mckenna. The event will also include an appearance by Miss Connecticut/Miss Litchfield County Brittany Decker. The co-host for the final performance at the Warner will be Tom Chute of WATR radio.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
