Robert F. 'Sully' Sullivan

AMENIA  — Robert F. “Sully†Sullivan, 84, of Lady Lake, Fla., passed away July 17, 2010, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Elaine Sullivan.
He was born April 4, 1926, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of  Harold “Nook†and Sophia Sullivan. A 40-year resident of Amenia, he moved to Lady Lake in 1994.

    He was a sports star in baseball and basketball at Poughkeepsie High School and was the leading hitter in baseball in his day. He played for numerous local club teams and spent several years with the semi-pro team the Poughkeepsie Roe Movers.

    Drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers, his career in organized baseball was interrupted by World War II. He served in the 617th field artillery battalion in Italy, where he earned the European Theater of Operations Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and Battle Stars for the Po Valley and Apennines campaigns.
   
    He continued his love of baseball after moving to Amenia, where he played in adult leagues and was a manager of the of the Amenia Little League and Babe Ruth teams for many years. He was inducted into the Dutchess County Softball and Baseball halls of fame.
   
    He was employed for many years as an insurance adjuster for Continental Insurance Company and also was co-owner of the Sports Circle Tavern in Amenia for several years. He was a past president, treasurer and life member of the Amenia Fire Company, a life member of the Amenia Lions Club, a life member of the VFW, and volunteered his time with many organizations.

    In addition to his wife, Elaine, he is survived by a son, Robert Jr. of California; two daughters, Lauren Lyle of Millerton and Linda Dingee of Dover Plains; a sister, Nancy Brown of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandsons; four nieces; and a nephew.

    Memorial services in Lady Lake will be held at a later date. Memorial services in Amenia will be held at the Amenia Fire House on Aug. 14.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Amenia Fire Company, PO Box 166, Amenia, NY 12501.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
