Arrest made in abuse case

NORTH CANAAN — A local teen was arrested July 20, accused of severely beating his infant son.

Dustin Lawrence, 19, of 92 Main St. was arraigned in court the next day, and held on a total  $200,000 bond. He is charged with first-degree assault, cruelty to persons and risk of injury to a minor. He is to enter a plea when he appears next on Aug. 3.

An investigation was launched in February, when Lawrence and his wife, Fawn Rosier, brought their 3-month-old baby to the Sharon Hospital emergency room. Police contend Lawrence beat the child, breaking 22 bones. He told police the baby was involved in two falls.

Lawrence has a history of violence, and has already served two jail terms, one for an assault with a deadly weapon charge in Massachusetts and one for stabbing a 14-year-old in an incident in North Canaan last year.

He has other pending cases. He was arrested May 31 and charged with disorderly conduct and assault on an elderly person. While in Bantam Superior Court last week, he was arrested on a warrant and charged with violation of conditions of release stemming from a March 28 incident. He was also arrested July 9 and charged with assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
