Students experience last summer before college

WINSTED — Northwestern Regional High School graduates are experiencing their transition between high school and college in a variety of ways this summer, ranging from earning extra spending money at summer jobs to taking a break before leaving home for school.

Brief interviews with a handful of these students revealed different approaches to their final summer break before moving on to higher education.

Northwestern graduate Meredith Clark said she will attend Plymouth State University in New Hampshire as a communications major in the fall. Clark recently visited New Hampshire to meet her future roommate. She said she is looking for a summer job and is excited about college life.

Tom Smith, who is heading for Saint Joseph’s College in Maine to major in criminal justice, works at Camp Workcoeman during the summer as a cooking instructor. Once summer is over, he will be done cooking and will begin swimming for his college team.

Aubrey Famularo will be attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa., in the fall. Until then, she is working at Mario’s Tuscany Grill and Bar. She is also a summer intern for the new Torrington Titans baseball team.

Dani Freeman, who will attend Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., in the fall, has been working at Pizzeria Marzano in Torrington, but says, “I really just like to hang out with my friends and sit by my pool or go to the beach with friends and family when I’m not busy. I am trying to keep my last summer before college open.

Brian Philips will attend the University of South Carolina this fall and said he is taking some time to relax. “I’m not really involved in anything, he said. “Just vacation and getting everything I need for college.

As most students are college bound, they all seem to approach their summer vacation with something different — work, camp, travel and/or recreational activities. But no matter what they do, they are all anticipating the same thing: another freshman year.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
