Colebrook teens arrested in drug case

COLEBROOK — Two eighteen-year-olds were arrested on warrants last week in connection with an April 28 drug deal that allegedly turned into a robbery.

Cuong Quach, of Sandy Brook Road in Colebrook, and Corey Casey, of Main Street in Winsted, were taken into custody at Quach’s home July 10.

Police said an unnamed complainant  went to the Sandy Brook Road home of Quach, and his brother Cang Williams to buy OxyContin. He hid his cash in his vehicle, having heard the brothers had robbed drug buyers in the past. The complainant stated the brothers threatened him with a machete and a rifle while searching him. Casey told police he was forced by the brothers to assist in searching the victim.

Quach was charged with first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, second-degree threatening, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree reckless endangerment, sixth-degree larceny, possession of more than four ounces of marijuana, unauthorized sale of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Quach was held on a $500,000 bond.

Casey was charged with accessory to commit first-degree robbery and accessory to commit first-degree unlawful restraint. Bond was set at $126,000.

Both were arraigned in Bantam Superior Court July 12. Quach’s bond was upheld. Casey’s was raised to $150,000. Both remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in Litchfield Court July 27.

Police say there may be more arrests in the case.

Casey also has a case pending for a charge of possession of alcohol by a minor. He was arrested March 9, when he was 17, by Winsted Police. He pleaded not guilty and will return to court on that matter Aug. 10.

Quach is currently in accelerated rehabilitation following a March 7 arrest, also by Winsted Police, for breach of peace and assault charges.

Accelerated rehabilitation is a form of probation available to first-time offenders. Their record is cleared if they remain out of trouble during the probationary period.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
