Winsted Whalers split outings

WINSTED — After claiming consecutive wins at home, the Winsted Whalers took a loss at Nonnewaug High School to witness their brief streak squashed by the Tribury Pavers. The Whalers occupy the fourth spot in the North Division, just behind the Thomaston Spoilers, after a 4-2 win over the Terryville Black Sox on Monday, June 28, and a 5-2 loss to the Pavers on Thursday, July 1.

After battling with the Brass City Brew in rainy weather for a hometown win the day before, the Whalers hosted the Black Sox at Walker Field the following day. Winsted’s Dan Connelly started at the mound and held the Whalers’ slight 2-1 lead, until being relieved by Donny Crossman after five innings.

The Black Sox evened things up with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Whalers reclaimed their lead in the bottom half of the inning after Whaler Justin Lovetere knocked in the game winning run. Crossman cushioned Winsted’s lead by driving in the fourth and final run of the game, helping earn himself the win in relief, 4-2.

Winsted’s Charlie Putnam scored two runs and drove in another two for the Whalers while Lovetere had a stellar afternoon, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

On their trip to Nonnewaug, the Whalers could not rally after a shaky first inning against the Pavers and as a result were unable to extend their winning streak to three.

Whaler Adam Piechowski coughed up four walks in the first inning, which — combined with a strong Paver performance at the plate — allowed Tribury to build a hefty four-run lead heading into the top of the second.

Piechowski was able to respond and tally six strikeouts through four innings while Putnam knocked in the Whalers’ first run on an RBI double in the fourth. Unfortunately for the Whalers, they could not pull themselves from their first inning hole and took the loss 5-2.

The Whalers’ record stands at 8-7 after their loss at Tribury. Winsted returns to Walker Field  July 14, where they face the Tri-Town Trojans at 5:45 p.m.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
