Health-care center, hospice program are celebrated

SHARON — More than 85 people took part in a celebration of the Sharon Health Care Center and Hospice Volunteer Program at the Bok Gallery of the TriArts Playhouse on Thursday, June 24.

The party was held for the donors to the center and the program, and was organized by United Methodist Homes, which owns the health-care center.

“This is an opportunity to thank our donors for their support, hospice Director Donna DiMartino said.

Julie Norko Kopta, associate director of development for United Methodist Homes, said last year the program served 45 families and the health-care center served 375 individuals.

“The donations help us close the gap between the state funding we get and what we spend, Kopta said. “Both the health-care center and the program are all about improving the quality of life for residents.

The Sharon Woman’s Club was thanked at the celebration, for undertaking three programs in collaboration with the health-care center.

“The Health Care Center and the volunteer programs fill needs and every community should have it, club president Lil Helming said. “When you live in this area, you have to drive a lot to get what you need. It’s nice to have all these programs here as opposed to being far away.

The programs include “Dining with Dignity, where members sew dining scarves for residents to wear at meals; “Comforts of Home, an effort to redecorate rooms of the health-care center to create a more home-like atmosphere, and “Art to Heart, where Woman’s Club members procure donations of artwork for residents’ rooms.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
