Police chief wanted

MILLBROOK — After years of operating without a police chief, the village of Millbrook is now advertising for a highly qualified, part-time police chief according to an ad, which appears in this week’s Millerton News.

“It’s overdue,â€ said Buddy Cox, a village trustee who retired last December after 24 years in the Poughkeepsie Police Department.  “We felt we needed an administrator to oversee the investment the village has made in the police department — someone to establish policies and procedures. We want to stay ahead of the curve.â€

Cox serves as the liaison between the village trustees and the police force.

“If you want police officers to do their job well, you must provide training and tools just like any other profession, Cox observed during a phone interview.

At this point, Cox said he is not a candidate for the position. The village is already receiving resumes, and the news has gone out through the Dutchess County police grapevine. Ideally the new police chief will start sooner rather than later, but the mayor and the Village Board will make the final determination.

The part-time chief will work a maximum of 20 hours a week at first.

“But this could always expand depending on what’s required by the job and the village budget, continued Cox.

Right now the police department has eight part-time police officers and two cars.

The qualifications include 20 years working in a full-time police department, administrative experience and specialized training. A BA in Criminal Justice or a related field would make the candidate especially attractive. The future chief will be required to relocate to the Millbrook area if not already a resident.
