Robert Bianco

MILLERTON — Robert Bianco, 78, died peacefully at Columbia Memorial Hospital with his family by his side, on May 28, 2010.  He was the husband of Marion Bianco.

Bob was born on Dec. 11, 1931, at Saint Catherine’s Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. He began working at the age of 10, doing odd jobs. For 35 years, he worked for Air Techniques in Hicksville, N.Y., and worked his way up to the position of plant manager.

After he retired in 1996, he relocated permanently to his weekend home with his wife, Marion. He began volunteering at Sharon  Health Care, and for the past 12 years he volunteered at the Webutuck Central School District, where he taught second graders reading, writing and woodworking skills.

Bob’s thirst for knowledge and love of books inspired his tireless efforts to give back to his community by helping children who struggled.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, he is survived by his daughter, Lisa Fredsall, and her husband Ryan of Norfolk; and his grandson, Nicholas Carlin.

Bob was predeceased by his father, Nicholas, and his brother, Joseph.

Arrangements are under the care of the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Millerton Volunteer Ambulance, Century Boulevard or the Northeast-Millerton Library, Main Street, both at Millerton, NY 12546.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
