Town, state, readers honor their favorite 'Cookie'

FALLS VILLAGE — The downpours on Saturday trapped at least 80 friends of June “Cookie Kubarek under a tent on the David M. Hunt Library grounds to celebrate her retirement after 25 years of service to the library and community.

However, no one minded because they were having so much fun —  chatting, and listening to the program emceed by George Elling,  Hunt’s board president.

First Selectman Pat Mechare read an official town proclamation declaring June 12, I Love Cookie Day.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell also proclaimed June 12, Cookie Kubarek Day in Connecticut.

Chris Allyn, a music teacher at the Lee H. Kellogg School, led the school chorus in three songs and accompanied them on the flute.

Lunch was prepared and served by D. M. Hunt volunteers.

Sharon Hamilton collected library patrons’ “love notesâ€ to  Kubarek in an album. Many echoed this sentiment: “I shall always remember how welcome you made me when I arrived in Falls Village.â€

Children’s comments were varied from “Sweet like sugar, awesome  like chocolate, you are the best!â€ to the ultimate librarian  compliment:“Thanks for teaching us that books are fun to read!â€

Kubarek and her husband, Rick, moved to Falls Village in 1974. In June 1984, the Hunt Board of Directors hired her as assistant librarian. In 1986, she was named the first children’s librarian at the Hunt Library, and in 1993 she was appointed head librarian.

In  1997, the Association of Connecticut Library Boards recognized Kubarek’s professional accomplishments with a citation for Outstanding Contributions to Library Services. In 1981, she and others researched the idea of providing a town day care center, and  approached the selectmen and the Board of Education.  The Falls Village Day Care  Center is now thriving in a town-owned building at 35 Page Road.

At this year’s Memorial Day ceremony, the selectmen awarded Kubarek the 2010 Town of Canaan Community Service Award for outstanding, long  and faithful service to the community.

“Cookie is best known for her service to the D.M. Hunt Library,â€ Mechare said during the award presentation. “During her tenure as director, she set the tone in the library with her friendliness, kindness, helpfulness and generosity. Everyone, especially children, gravitated her way, helping to make the library a popular gathering place and center of activity, learning, culture and relaxation in  Falls Village.â€

A new plaque in the library reads: “In honor of June ‘Cookie’ Kubarek for over 25 years of her warmth and kindness to  readers of all ages. David M. Hunt Library, 1984 to 2010.â€

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
