Artist member gives to SVAS

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Service (SVAS) is an all-volunteer organization whose members are on call 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week to respond to emergencies in the community.

SVAS responded to 30 calls in the month of May. These included: seven dispatches for a sick person; five falls; five difficulty breathing; two for chest pain; one trauma; and one psychiatric call. There were five standbys for the Lakeville Hose Co.

SVAS went on standbys to The Hotchkiss School for graduation, Riga Meadow for a horse show and Lime Rock Park for the Memorial Day weekend races.

There were no search and rescues or motor vehicle accident calls.

Six of the dispatches involved residents of Noble Horizons.

Terre Lefferts, a Salisbury resident, painter and new member of the SVAS squad, presented the group with a check for $850, which represented proceeds from a sale of her paintings at a show at John Harney Real Estate.

Lefferts is committed to sharing the proceeds with the ambulance service.

“This is a great charity to give to, she said. “I personally have benefited from your assistance and I was hoping to get to $1,000 in my donation.

She noted the show remains up at John Harney Real Estate until Sept. 30 (open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily). The paintings and pastels are landscapes and rural scenes. The ambulance service will get 30 percent from each sale.

This monthly column by Lakeville Journal copy editor and ambulance squad volunteer Tara Kelly is an update on EMS activities.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
