Fire District chooses officers

NORTH CANAAN — The annual meeting of the Canaan Fire District was held May 11. The primary order of business was to elect — in most cases, re-elect — officers and executive committee members.

Prior to the meeting, Nania told The Journal the district members always welcome people interested in positions.

The district operates the sewer system, and provides streetlights, sidewalks and fire hydrants in some areas. Salaries are nominal, and filling all the required posts takes some bush-beating.

“We have been very lucky to have people devoted to the town and willing to do these jobs for many years, Nania said.

He himself had announced awhile back he would not seek re-election as warden, but continues in the post he has held for nearly 30 years now.

Just how much dedication it takes came to light last summer, with the death of longtime clerk/treasurer John Foley. Nania took over the jobs, and will continue to assist new treasurer Richard Crane Jr.

“John did an amazingly efficient job, but it is still a lot of work. I now know it took far more hours than the $2,000 salary is worth.

All that said, there are some new faces mixed in with longtime district leaders.

Todd Shearer is the new clerk, which has been separated from the treasurer’s position.

Executive Committee members are Mario DiGiacomo, Geoffrey Drury, George Johannesen, Nania, LeRoy Riva, William Segalla, David Simonds and Todd Shearer.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
