'NASCAR' Dave MacMillan: Grange Citizen of the Year

SHARON — “NASCAR†Dave MacMillan,  was named citizen of the year by the Taghhannuck Grange on May 13, in honor of his work as co-founder of the Sunday in the Country Food Drive.

A native of Sharon, MacMillan spent much of his career at the Culinary Institute of America in the refrigeration department.

He now works part-time at the Maplebrook School in Amenia and hosts “Hometown Sunday Morning†on Robin Hood Radio (WHDD-99.1FM, 1020AM and robinhoodradio.com).

“The drive is a year-round endeavor with hard work involved,†Grange member Barbara Prindle said in her speech honoring MacMillan. “In addition to the food drive, Dave pitches in to help people in need, such as when WHDD got hit by lightning last year and his work with The Wounded Warrior Project. He is a good neighbor on a grand scale.â€

MacMillan helps organize seven major fundraisers each year for the food drive, with events throughout the Northwest Corner and in nearby New York state.

On Thursday he also received a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly from state Rep. Roberta Willis (D-64) for his fundraising work.

MacMillan said he was honored — and surprised.

“I was honestly taken aback by the recognition from both the Grange and the General Assembly,†he said. “I never thought the food drive would ever get this big. The amount of volunteers who help the drive ... they’re the ones who do the physical work. I seem to get all the credit, but the volunteers are the ones who do the work. There are hundreds of people who help make this all happen.â€

Last year, the food drive raised more than $50,000 for food pantries in 16 towns  in the Tri-state region. The money provided Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to those in need.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
