Northwestern routs Gilbert softball, 16-2

WINSTED — The Gilbert Yellowjackets softball team hosted the Highlanders at Rowley Field Tuesday, April 20. Northwestern took advantage of a shorthanded Jacket lineup to claim a colossal 16-2 road victory.

Jacket coach Mark Douglass expressed concerns during his team’s pre-game warm up regarding the absence of Jess Shotwell, Gilbert’s starting pitcher, saying that it would be difficult to earn wins in a busy four-game week without her on the mound.

The Jackets looked to freshman pitcher Emily Owens, who made her starting debut for her squad against the offensively solid Highlanders.

Owens had a strong start, knocking off the Highlanders’ first two batters on easy fly-outs, but a shot into the outfield turned into a triple because of a Gilbert fielding error. Northwestern added a follow-up triple to drive in the first run of the game and ended the first ahead by one.

Sophomore Brittany Martel had a stellar day on the mound for the Highlanders and quickly dispatched Gilbert’s batters in three strikeouts.

Northwestern exploded in the second, adding to their score with a homerun from Nikki Bianchi and an RBI by Gina Russo.  The Highlanders pulled far ahead by the end of the inning, 6-0.

Gilbert followed up with a strong defensive effort in the top of the third that kept a hit-happy Highlander team from adding to a growing lead. They put up a strong offensive effort in the bottom of the inning.

Gilbert’s Mallory Rotondo started things off with a ground single and would eventually score off an unearned run, cutting the lead to 6-1. Yellowjacket Courtney Hoxie had a number of strong, battling efforts at the plate and brought in another run for the Jackets off a bunt-out. The Jackets finished out the inning slowly closing the gap, 6-2.

The Highlanders, now slightly bloodied, responded by decimating the Jackets through the middle and late innings, extending their lead to 15-2 heading into the seventh.

Unable to activate their offense and still plagued by fielding errors, Gilbert was forced to chalk up the 16-2 loss at home.

Bianchi led the Highlanders’ offense with two home runs, with Casey Burke, Sam Cilenti, Gina Russo and Emily LeGeyt contributing to Northwestern’s 17-hit effort as well. Martel finished her astonishing afternoon with 19 strikeouts, giving up only one hit and two runs.

Owens fought her way through six innings in her starting debut and was able to tally one strikeout before being relieved in the final inning.

The Highlanders improve to 3-2, while the Jackets remain winless at 0-3.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
