Frenzl photo exhibit at library

MILLBROOK — Friends, family, coworkers and collectors gathered at the Millbrook Library on the evening of Wednesday, April 14, to celebrate the month-long April photo exhibition of John Frenzl’s recent work. Thirty  large color photographs of local subjects from vegetables to portraits are on view until the end of the month.

Joan Frenzl, the artist’s wife and library’s youth services director, said the show reminded her of “the great days we’ve had together, traveling around and taking pictures. There are views of the Buddhist monastery in Carmel, the railroad bridge over the Hudson and a dog gazing from behind a screen door.

Most of the photographs were taken over the last year. Frenzl explained that he was very involved in photography when he was young, but had lost interest until digital cameras came on the market. He purchased his first Nikon SLR camera in 2004 and has been taking pictures ever since. Professionally, Frenzl works as the director of information technology for HOSPICE of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc.

The Millbrook Library gallery curator Lorraine Hartin-Gelardi selected 30 pictures for the show from more than 100 that Frenzl provided.

“The variety of subject matter, like a bunch of leeks or a bus, is impressive,â€ said Hartin-Gelardi.  “Most photographers focus on a certain type of subject, but Frenzl has a wide range and a wonderful technique.â€

She said that this was Frenzl’s third one-man show at the library and that he is developing a real following among local collectors.

The Frenzl photography show will continue until the end of April and all photos are available for purchase for $75. The next exhibition will be large abstract paintings by Ourania Panon.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
