Annual town cleanup this Saturday

KENT — The annual Earth Day town cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 24, starting at 9 a.m. behind the Kent Memorial Library.

The cleanup is being organized by the Kent Garden Club with members Charlotte Lindsey and Sabine Gibson spearheading the event.

Gibson said she is looking for as many volunteers as possible to help with the town-wide activity.

“We’re beating the drum, Gibson said. “Sometimes we have the manpower, sometimes we don’t. This is a service to the community that does not cost anything except a few hours of time. It’s very rewarding to see a clean town.

Gibson said that the town’s overall cleanliness has improved during the past few years.

“However, there are a few places in town that seem to be dumping grounds, she said. “Some litter may have been because something flew off of someone’s truck while driving to the transfer station. Overall, I think people are much more conscious of recycling and dumping in general.

For more information, call Gibson at 860-927-4118.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
