Housatonic baseball early win against Wamogo, 4-2

FALLS VILLAGE — Housy baseball teams played Wamogo in simultaneous games on their home fields Monday, April 12. A cold, whipping wind that intermittently canceled out the warm sunshine did not seem to phase varsity players, who looked confident and relaxed, marking a 4-2 win.

That confidence came at the top of the first inning, when the first three batters scored three runs.

Nick Dignacco’s consistent pitching, including 12 strikeouts, made it an easy day in the field for his teammates. The senior attracted some fans who came out just to watch him pitch. After graduation, the standout will head to the United States Military Academy at West Point on a baseball scholarship.

The varsity team marked their second win of the season against Wamogo, after a big victory over Terryville High School last week, followed by a loss at Thomaston.

The JV team has notable talent, including a full game pitched by sophomore Will Terrall Monday, with catcher John Haddon behind the plate, and strong hitting that scored them six runs. But it wasn’t enough against Wamogo’s generally larger players, who whacked more than a few very long balls over the heads of outfielders, racking up 13 runs.

JV also took a loss last week at Terryville, but it’s early. The regular season runs through May 26. A full schedule for all sports teams can be found at hvrhs.org.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
