Evelyn (Tompkins) Jenkins

AMENIA — Evelyn (Tompkins) Jenkins, 91, a longtime resident of Amenia, died April 8, 2010, at her home with her husband and cousin at her bedside.  

Born Feb. 23, 1919, in Berkshire, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Nina (Stinard) and Briggs Caragan Tompkins.  She was a graduate of Pawling High School and attended courses at Dutchess County BOCES.   

She married Harry J. Jenkins Jr., Aug. 4, 1962, in the Chapel at the Foundation for Christian Living in Pawling, the Rev. Mary Peale officiating.

Mrs. Jenkins was employed by the Pawling Rubber Corporation  in the 1950s, as a payroll clerk and was a member of the three-member team to create the cost accounting department using the McBee Keysort System.  She was later employed in the office at Lumelite Corporation in Pawling for several years.  She retired from Ralph A. Schwaikert & Associates (Babbit Products and Western Cleansers) in Lakeville, where she was the assistant to the controller.  

She was a member of the Pawling Methodist Church, the Coterie in Amenia, the Bernina Sewing Club in Poughkeepsie, and was active in the Women’s Association at the First Presbyterian Church in Amenia and the Amenia Historical Society.  She was a devoted wife, homemaker and a skilled seamstress as well as a very talented person with many hobbies.

In addition to her husband, she is  survived by a sister, Elizabeth Thornton, of Gansevoort, N.Y.; a niece, Mary Ellen Danielson and her husband, Lee, of Franklin, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was very close to and predeceased by her brother, Leon L. Tompkins and his wife, Margaret (Macartney) Tompkins; a niece, Patricia Gibbs; her brother, Lloyd S. Tompkins; and three sisters, Eleanor Maile, Virginia Louise Wirta Jenkins and Arletta Ruberg.  

Funeral services took place April 13, with the Rev. Mark Allen officiating.  Burial followed at Amenia Island Cemetery.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
