Trails and bikeways promoted in town

PINE PLAINS — The Friends of Stissing Landmarks (FOSL) submitted a letter to the Town Board at its monthly meeting March 18, based on a statement made at the special joint meeting the previous night for a review of the Carvel Property Development’s NND pre-application.

“This letter was in the draft stage before Rick Butler issued his very welcome request at the combined boards meeting for citizens to come forward with specific ideas on new trails in our community,â€ FOSL President Scott Chase stated.  “It has now taken on greater significance.â€

The letter went on to request the town create a committee to promote trails and bikeways throughout Pine Plains.

“We see these as beneficial for a multitude of reasons: exercise, spiritual renewal, transportation, safety and economic development through tourism, Chase wrote, adding that the group also wants the town to amend the comprehensive plan to “specifically identify routes for bikeways and trails as well as areas that should be linked.

“Adding this more specific language to the comprehensive plan will enable the Planning Board to have a basis to request and require  trail/sidewalk/bikeway improvements be designed into projects as properties are developed,â€ he stated. “This will be particularly important as some of the large developments move forward in the coming years.â€

FOSL also requested the board think about forming a committee with representatives with “diverse interestsâ€ from the Planning Board, Conservation Advisory Council (CAC), Recreation Department, FOSL itself and the business community to help develop  a precise and detailed trail and bikeway plan.

Town Supervisor Gregg Pulver said after reading Chase’s letter into the record at the Town Board meeting that the idea was worth pursuing.

“We’ll have to keep that on the front burner, he said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
