Performance standards reviewed

PINE PLAINS — Attorney to the Town Warren Replansky spoke briefly at the March Town Board meeting about the board’s request for him to draft performance standards for members of the zoning and planning boards.

“I think it came out pretty well, he said. “It required all zoning board members to familiarize themselves with zoning law procedures and all Planning Board members to familiarize themselves with subdivision review, etc., and to conduct themselves in conformity with all rules and regulations.

Replansky added that all members each have to complete a minimum of four hours of training to be eligible for reappointment. Additionally, no member of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) or of the Planning Board may miss more than three meetings a year, other than for medical reasons.

The Town Board has the power to remove a member for noncompliance with training, attendance, failure to disclose a conflict of interest, failure to comply with the ethics law or for failure to comply with the efforts of other municipal boards.

The town must give any member at risk of losing his or her seat 30 days notice prior to a hearing and the determination of the board has to be provided in writing.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
