TriArts surviving despite hard times

SHARON — TriArts at the Sharon Playhouse, now in its 21st season, will hold a special spring fundraiser called Spotlight 2010 on Saturday, May 29, at the Salisbury School boathouse from 5:30  to 8:30 p.m.

The event will include a live and a silent auction as well as musical performances.

“The last year was a difficult one for everyone in the performing arts industry,†said TriArts Executive Director Alice Bemand. “We were all hit in a number of different ways. In our case, our donation rate and ticket sales were down last year and our expenses went way up. If only one of those areas had been impacted it wouldn’t be so bad, but in this case it was a trifecta. We had to cut back on our budget and the staff all took salary cuts.â€

Bemand would not share exact financial numbers, but she said numbers were bad enough all the way around that TriArts will be cutting two programs this year.

She said the Young Playwrights contest, held annually for students from grades three to 12, will not be held this year.

Also, the Bryan L. Knapp New Works Series, which presented staged readings by new playwrights throughout the year, will not be held this theater season.

However, TriArts will still offer four productions this year starting in June: “The Wedding Singerâ€, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Beeâ€, “Oklahoma!†and “Divas Do Broadway.â€

“At the end of the last season our circumstances were a little scary,†Bemand said. “Now, thanks to our fund developing committee and our board of directors, I do see a light at the end of the tunnel.â€

Bemand added that an anonymous donor gave TriArts a matching donation of $25,000 donation after the board of directors raised $25,000.

“That donor recently told us they will add a second $25,000 matching donation for any of the donations we receive from the public,†Bemand said. “Which means that if someone donates $25, then it would mean $50 to TriArts.â€

The donor will match all funds raised at Spotlight 2010 up to $25,000.

Which is why, Bemand said, the upcoming Spotlight 2010 fundraiser is important.

“The reason why we called it Spotlight 2010 is because the event will shine a spotlight on TriArts,†Bemand said.

Tickets for the event are $100 per person. For more information and to purchase tickets call 860-364-7469 ext. 100 or visit triarts.net.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
