Spring Splash is a splash

LAKEVILLE — Mother Nature smiled on this year’s edition of the Spring Splash, with the air temperature at 60 degrees and the water in Lake Wonoscopomuc a manageable 43 degrees.

Jacquie Rice said in the first year of the fundraising event (2004) “We had to cut through 14 inches of ice.

“Thanks to Dad and Jane for the good weather, she quipped. The Spring Splash raises money for two causes, the Houstonic FFA Alumni John Rice Scholarship fund, in honor of Rice’s late father, and the Jane Lloyd Fund, which assists area families with members fighting cancer.

Rice and Jeff Lloyd thanked the community for its continued support. Lloyd said the fund helped 18 families and provided about $40,000 last year.

Lloyd and Brian Bartram competed to see who could go out farthest and stay in longest. Lloyd emerged, wet, victorious, and only slightly blue around the edges.

About 40 people participated.

Visitors to the Town Grove also got a look at the new building. The roof of the porch is up, and much of the exterior is shingled.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
