First 2010 Lions meeting a lively one

The Millerton Lions Club’s first dinner meeting of 20l0 was  Jan. 27 at the Big Grill restaurant. Good food, attentive service and wonderful company. Thank you, Big Grill, for such a fine job. Our next meeting will be hosted by the Millerton Ladies Auxiliary at Legion Post l78 on Wednesday, March 24.

President Todd Clinton started the evening off reading several thank-you letters from donation recipients as well as a note from Jake and Shirley Shoifet, who recently relocated to Texas. They miss everyone here. Well, right back at ya’ cause we miss you too.

It proved to be an â€œaward- winningâ€ evening as Ed Downey was dubbed our Citizen of the Year. A 35-year member, Ed gives his all to everything he does — not only here but in neighboring communities as well. He’s the hard-working chairman of our scholarship committee and is also the man responsible for incorporating our club in 2009. In a short, humble speech, he credited his parents for encouraging him to be actively involved. Thanks to his mom and dad, and congratulations to Ed.

Lewis Saperstein received a “key pin in recognition of sponsoring more than two new members, while president Todd Clinton did quite well himself. Secretary Tom Tighe presented him with the “Club President Pin Award for achieving positive net growth in the year ending 2009. Todd, along with our club, was awarded two new patches to proudly display on our banner, including the “President’s Retention patch for 2008-09, as well as one for year-round growth. Congratulations, Todd.

The honor means that under Todd’s leadership our numbers not only continue to grow, but they are staying strong. Thanks Todd and hooray for all of us.

Treasurer Lewis Saperstein reported 20l0 calendar receipts are going well, but not so for our 11-month raffle ticket sales. Come on, Lions, let’s “git ‘er doneâ€ so we can start our monthly drawings. It only costs $20 for 66 chances to win cash, and what a great cause to collect for — our scholarship fund. There are still some tickets out there, so if anyone is interested let me know and I might be able to help. (Just give me a call at Saperstein’s.) I know some people who know some people ...

Lana Morrison, a hometown gal and branch manager of the all-new Salisbury Bank & Trust in Millerton, joined us for the evening as our newest (still to be inducted) member on Jan. 27. I am sure we will be hearing lots more from her. Welcome, Lana.

Tail twister Glynda got her “twist on and fined several members for failing to wear their Lions pins. And, right after winning our 50/50 drawing, Michael Jordan (along with our newest member) was tagged for not being on time. Gotcha. Although he looked shocked, Michael paid up with a smile and Lana promised she wouldn’t be late again.

I don’t know about you, but in my vocabulary that particular word usually comes right after “I’ll try not to be ...â€

‘Til next time.

Melanee Mayville has been a member of the Lions Club since 2008. She lives in Millerton with her husband, Dave, and their hand-me-down cat, Theory.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
