Carvel presentation set for Tuesday

PINE PLAINS — Those interested in learning more about the Carvel NND pre-application will have an opportunity Tuesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. when the Town Board and the Planning Board will hold a joint meeting with representatives from the Durst Organization, the applicants behind the Carvel Property Development, to discuss the pre-application. The meeting will be held at the community center at the new library.

The pre-application was first presented to the Town Board on Jan. 21, 2010, when Alexander Durst, vice-president of the Durst Organization, gave an update on the project’s current status. It also provided  the opportunity to submit pre-application materials to the board for New Neighborhood Development (NND) consideration.

“We stand ready to work with the town, Durst said at the time. “There have been a series of objections to other versions of this plan, and those comments and criticisms have affected our plan. Many have criticized the NND, but without the NND there is no guarantee that over 1,400 acres of open space will be protected in perpetuity or that affordable housing will be available.

The purpose of the pre-application is to obtain a critique. There are limited materials to review and the town’s codes make it clear that its feedback is nonbinding and could be withdrawn or changed as there’s no approval needed through the SEQRA (State Environmental Quality Review Act) process, according to the Dursts’ attorney, Jennifer Van Tuyl.

As of January she also said it would be “premature to say when they will return with the actual application. Word of that date might be mentioned at Tuesday’s meeting.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
