Splash! 32 schools compete in championship swim meet

LAKEVILLE — Swimmers, divers, parents and coaches packed The Hotchkiss School pool Saturday, March 6, and Sunday, March 7, for this year’s Northeast Prep School Swimming Association championship.

During competition, the chlorine-scented air reverberated with whistling and screaming fans. The scene was like that of an exclusive New England Olympics — all that was missing was NBC.

The Kent School took first in the boys 200-yard medley relay in which Jason Adams, Benton Bair, Blair Steele and Michael Lindburg swam. Adams also took first in the 100-yard butterfly, while Tyler Bulakul of Hotchkiss took second.

Jack Pretto of Hotchkiss took first place in the 100-yard backstroke and second in the 200-yard freestyle.

Records fell this year. The Deerfield Academy girls team of Bragg, McLeod, Hoew and Pielock set the record for the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38:54.

For Choate Rosemary Hall, the girls team of Lima, Hillas, Futterman and Sawyer set the record for the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:04:52. Jamie Hillas also set the 100-meter breaststroke record with a time of 1:13:85.

“When all the best swimmers in the Northeast are here, records are going to happen, Keith Moon, Hotchkiss boys varsity swim coach, observed.

This is the second year in a row that the championship has been held at the Hotchkiss pool. Every two years the location rotates among The Hotchkiss School, Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
