Searching for water for 100 years with Allyn & Sons

NORTH CANAAN — When Louis E. Allyn attempted to drill for oil a hundred years ago in New York state, he came up short. What he found instead, though, was water — and a lot of it.

Pressured to move on after his failure in one industry but success in another, Allyn brought his equipment back to his farm and home in East Canaan and again drilled down. Again, he got water.

Neighbors started asking him to drill wells and, as Louis’ grandson, John Allyn, said, “it was just kind of a domino effect” after that.
