Mary Jo Bartlett

AMENIA — Mary Jo Bartlett, 96, a 60-year resident of Amenia, died at home on Feb. 28, 2010.  Born July 10, 1913, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Mary E. (Whalen) and Anthony J. Whalen.

During World War II, Mrs. Bartlett served as a corporal in the United States Army Air Force and earned the Good Conduct, American Service and Victory Medals and the YAAC service ribbon.  After her discharge from the service in 1945, she resided in Winter Haven, Fla., where she worked as a hairdresser.

She married William E. Bartlett in Florida on April 21, 1950. He predeceased her on June 8, 1995.  

Mrs. Bartlett is survived by two sons, William W. Bartlett and his wife, Dawn Marie, of Amenia and Barry W. Bartlett of Amenia; three grandsons, Christopher Bartlett, William W. Bartlett Jr. and Joseph Bartlett; a granddaughter, Alexis Bartlett; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph, Babe, Brick and Turk Whalen; and three sisters, Kathleen Lamb, Elizabeth Mattheson and Emma Parsons.  

Calling hours are Thursday, March 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22 in Dover Plains. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 5, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. Burial will take place in the spring at Amenia Island Cemetery.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
