Lady Highlanders drop Nonnewaug, 48-38

WINSTED — Northwestern Regional High School girls basketball hosted the Nonnewaug Chiefs Friday, Feb. 2, when the Highlanders preserved an early lead to take the 48-38 victory on home territory.

Northwestern looked strong early in the first, finding openings all over the court to finish out offensive chances. Nonnewaug seemed shaky through the first, and that was reflected in the score, with the Highlanders ahead 20-8 at the end of the first.

The Highlanders maintained control of the game throughout the second, and despite some of their top guns sitting down for fear of being fouled out, Northwestern saw steady scoring throughout their lines. The Highlanders remained firmly in the lead 34-16 heading into halftime.

It took three quarters for the Chiefs to show up offensively, but for every good moment Nonnewaug could produce, the Highlanders responded immediately with one of their own. That offensive push did allow the Chiefs to chop down the lead a bit, 48-27.

Through the fourth Nonewaug really kicked it into gear, sinking a handful of shots from outside then finding plenty of success at the foul line to put themselves within 12 points with three minutes remaining.

Despite stumbling a bit in the fourth, Northwestern reclaimed control and slowed the pace to a crawl, killing the final minutes to take the 48-38 victory at home.

The Highlanders were led in scoring by Nicole Folino, who tallied 16 points for her team. The Highlander’s record improves to 12-4.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
