Countdown begins: Chocolate Fest 2010

KENT — A wondrous wonderland of chocolate cheerfulness is only days away. The 15th annual Kent Center School Chocolate Fest will be held at the school’s cafeteria on Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 3:30 to 6 p.m., with a snow date of Feb. 11.

For a $5 ticket, fest-goers will be able to choose from a multitude of chocolatey treats, including homebaked goods and treats from local cooks and businesses.

The sweet sale benefits the Kent Center School scholarship fund, which awards scholarships to Kent Center School alumni.

This year’s chairman, Kate Kovacs Lurtsema, is herself a graduate of the school — and a past recipient of a scholarship.

“The economy has been in trouble, and that has been a major concern for the scholarship fund board,†Lurtsema said. “However, we are astounded by the continuous amount of support and donations we have recieved from the community.â€

Last year’s event raised a record $4,000, and Lurtsema hopes that this year’s event will raise even more.

“Wouldn’t anyone want to take a shower in chocolate?†she offered. “That’s what this event is going to be like. We’re going to have a chocolate fountain set up again where you can dip pretzels, marshmallows and various items into it. Also, we will have new vendors this year. It should be another good year.â€

Baked goods may be donated and delivered to the school on Feb. 10 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Bakers are reminded that there is a no-nuts policy due to student nut allergies.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
