Boys Scouts turn into Eskimos for a day

AMENIA — Last Saturday, Jan. 23, was a transformative journey for Dutchess County Webelos Cub Scouts who traveled to James Baird State Park for the annual Eskimo Run.

In preparation for the event, each competing den built a sled that could carry food and emergency supplies. The teams then pulled their sleds around the park to different stations, where they were tested on their scouting skills and knowledge.

Amenia’s Pack 29, Den 1 is a group of seven first-year Webelos Scouts (mostly fourth-graders) who were competing in the event for the first time. The boys were required to handle their own belongings and steer their sled without any adult help.

County participation was at a maximum, with 48 sleds and more than 500 Scouts participating. Pack 29 scored 70/70 for their sled design and construction, which Nick Jasmin, 9, said they built over the course of a few days at the Presbyterian church in town.

“We had to carry lunches and extra stuff for the sled, Nick explained the day after the event. “It was pretty heavy.

In order to answer the questions posed at the different stations, Scouts were required to study their handbooks and work as a team.

Pulling a sled around a park in the middle of January isn’t the easiest task, and it’s no surprise that Nick’s favorite memory of the event was the reward at the end.

“The best part was getting the hot cocoa, he said, “but I had fun.

Den 1 did not place in any of the events, but Den Leader Vicky Jasmin (Nick’s mother) said the day was a success nonetheless.

“The boys went away with a great feeling of accomplishment, developed teamwork skills and had a great time doing it, she said.

Den 1, formally known as “The Streaking Bacon Eagles (Scouts are allowed to choose a name for their dens), received patches for their performance and participation in Saturday’s events.

Coming up for the Scouts is the annual Blue and Gold dinner on Feb. 13, which this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America. Pack 29 will joint other scouts for a huge Jamboree campout in celebration at the Rhinebeck Fair Grounds in May.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
