Women's networking: 'Make your own rules'

TORRINGTON — The Litchfield County Women’s Network is kicking off the new year with “Make Your Own Rules: Social Networking for Women in Business†Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The discussion will be led by Suzi Craig, the marketing and engagement director for the Hartford-based Fathom, a brand and creative consulting group.

The talk will take place at the Yankee Pedlar, 93 Main St. in Torrington, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for members and $35 for guests.

Chana Monahan, the network’s president and Winsted resident, told The Journal that while her group’s main focus is “face-to-face†networking, the business world has expanded to include other avenues as well.

“We have to realize that there is online networking, too,†Monahan said. “We have to keep with the times.â€

The discussion will focus on three main areas:

• An understanding of each social networking environment, etiquette and how they are maturing

• How to find your sweet spot and change the way you conduct business

• Ways to manage social networking so it enhances your business, not hinders it

Those signing up for this session do not need an extensive knowledge of social networking, Monahan said. And all those who attend are encouraged to bring their questions to discuss with the group.

“We want to create a comfortable environment,†Monahan said.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
