BOE recognizes community for its support, addresses reconfiguration plans

PINE PLAINS — A recognition event for everyone who assisted the school district on Nov. 10, when a district resident took the Stissing Mountain Middle School Principal Bob Hess hostage at gunpoint for more than two hours, is in the works, according to District Superintendent Linda Kaumeyer and members of the Board of Education (BOE).

“It really involves everyone in the community who assisted,†explained school board President Helene McQuade at the Jan. 6 meeting. “From fire and police departments, the Red Cross to local businesses and more.â€

The BOE is looking to finalize a date sometime near the end of April or beginning of May. Kaumeyer explained that the event, following in the footsteps of a successful district volunteer recognition night, would provide an opportunity for social interaction and give the district another chance to thank everyone for their help.

open house dates

Parents are invited to attend a series of open houses to be held at the Seymour Smith and Cold Spring elementary schools at the end of this month and into February.

The board and administration are moving forward with reconfiguration plans. Kindergarten through grade two will be housed at Cold Spring while grades three to five will find a home at Seymour Smith. Parents will have the opportunity to tour the school building their children will be attending. The meetings will be hosted by the elementary school principal, as well as faculty, staff and parent volunteers.

The events will be identical in presentation, including a brief building tour as well as transportation information, transition support and additional details regarding the change. However, as Kaumeyer pointed out, the midday sessions will have the added bonus of allowing parents to see the building in operation.

Letters will be sent to parents informing them of these dates;  more information about reconfiguration is also available on the district’s Web site at ppcsd.org. Those who plan to attend are encouraged to contact either Seymour Smith at 518-398-3000 or Cold Spring 845-868-7451.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
