Another break-in at Baird's

CORNWALL — For the second time in six months, Baird’s General Store in Cornwall Bridge has been the target of a burglar.

The latest break-in was discovered just after 6 a.m. Jan. 10. About 60 packs of cigarettes were taken.

Owner Tom Baird said he may have reached the point of investing in a security system.

The store is right on Route 7, near the intersection of Route 4. A streetlight in front of the store stays on all night long. Yet passing cars are rare during the night, and it wouldn’t be a very bold move for someone to break in through the front door.

“It was odd that both times the lady who lives upstairs was not there, Baird said. “I guess if there is a car parked there or lights on upstairs, it’s a deterrent.

The investigating trooper noted a recent a string of break-ins, from Kent to Salisbury, and said the police have a suspect. If an arrest is made, then the police may be able to determine if it is one person committing all the burglaries, or if it is the work of several people.

In recent years there have been several thefts in this small commercial triangle. Richard Bramley, owner of the Cornwall Package Store, had his truck stolen there. Last year, the National Iron Bank branch was robbed.

In the meantime, state police are urging people not to hesitate to call 911 for anything suspicious.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
